We specialise in digestion

At Fremantle Natural Health our Naturopaths Laura Hickey and Debbie Wilkinson specialise in all elements of digestive health.

We can muscle test you during your initial consult, so you know what foods you are intolerant to and we can support and streghten your digestive system, so that you can once again eat those foods without pain or discomfort.

If we feel you need it we can also offer functional testing including microbiome mapping and SIBO testing, – to have a deep look into your digestion and work from there. Areas we are confident with include;

Why is digestion and the gut so important?

At Fremantle Natural Health we strongly believe that all illness starts in the gut.

Our digestive system is the interface between the inside if our body and the outside world. From an integrative perspective, the gut is not merely a digestive tube—it is a master regulator touching immunity, mood, metabolism and detoxification. Treat it as an ecosystem to be nurtured, not a battlefield, and systemic health often follows.

The gut is your nutrient‐gateway

All macronutrients, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients have to cross the gut wall before they can reach cells. If digestion (stomach acid, pancreatic enzymes, bile flow) or absorption (villi, brush-border transporters) is impaired, systemic deficiencies will appear even on a “perfect” diet. This is why clinicians trained in functional medicine often begin a work-up with questions about stool quality, bloating, reflux and appetite.

It houses most of the immune system

Roughly 70-80 % of all immune cells reside in gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), constantly sampling what comes through the small intestine and deciding whether to tolerate or attack it.
A compromised barrier (“leaky gut”) lets food antigens and toxins slip through, priming systemic inflammation that can manifest anywhere—joints, skin, brain or thyroid.

The microbiome is a metabolic organ in its own right

Beneficial bacteria ferment fibres and polyphenols into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate, acetate and propionate. SCFAs:

  • nourish colonocytes, tightening junctions and reducing permeability

  • modulate T-reg cells and dampen auto-immunity

  • signal via the vagus nerve and endocrine routes to influence appetite, insulin sensitivity and even mood and cognition

Gut–brain, gut–skin and gut–hormone axes

Enterochromaffin cells in the gut make ~90 % of the body’s serotonin; microbes also influence GABA, dopamine and tryptophan pathways. Dysbiosis is therefore linked with anxiety, depression, insomnia and neurodevelopmental issues that many integrative clinicians see improve once GI ecology is corrected. Skin (acne, eczema, psoriasis), oestrogen clearance and bile-acid metabolism show similar bidirectional links.

Detoxification and enterohepatic recycling

The gut–liver loop is responsible for conjugating and eliminating xenobiotics, used hormones and heavy metals. Bad bacteria in the gut can reverse that process, re-circulating toxins. Supporting microbial balance, bile flow (bitters), soluble fibre and phase-II nutrients is essential for healthy detoxification.
